Most later serial numbered will shift a lot nicer than the earlier models. Definitely look for a tractor with a serial number later than 20,000... I have been thru all that, and could not get the later PCU software to put into an early model. You can only get a 8.1L in the later models, but like Jari said, you may be able to tune the later model.
