Bingo! While electric cars make very efficient use of the electricity they consume there is a lot more to the story than what's on top of the wheels. But that goes for everything. The same can be said for fossil fuels as well.

As consumers we tend to only look at the efficiency of converting what we buy to useable work. The other side of the story is the efficiency of producing and transporting the product we are buying to the point of sale to the consumer.

I would bet we would be surprised at the amount of energy potential that is actually lost in the entire process of any fuel source we buy. We are only using a very small percentage of the actual energy potential and the rest is lost in the process.
