Southern MB
Slowly adapt rumen to barley. Once adapted, increase barley from 40% dry matter intake to desired level not stepping up more than 10% every 7 days. 850lb steer should eat about 20lb dry matter per day. 40% of 20lb = 8lb barley/h/d dry matter. If possible split feedings to 2x per day. Maintain adequate roughage as you increase grain amount. Watch intakes and manure.

Grains can be ranked according to the level of acid production as they relate to grain overload. Greatest to least acid producing in the rumen during digestion….. Wheat > Barley > Corn > Oats. Maintain a coarse particle size when rolling grain. If >50% barley in ration (on a dry matter basis) break grain kernel into no more than three pieces on average to help slow rate of digestion.
