I'm thinking that the oil pump gears are below the oil level on those so it should be just fine for priming the pump. My guess would be that the pipe plug behind the cam on the oil gallery is missing. Of course in order to even check it you have to pull the timing cover off, then to put it in you have to hold the lifters up and remove the cam... Like another poster said though, prelube the engine with a pressure container with oil with the gauge hooked up. If it reads oil pressure then you do have a pump problem.
