The Konza prairie also had separate pastures where bison and cattle grazed. Cows would graze more spread out and evenly. Buffalo would graze down one spot at a time really heavy kind of like high intensity grazing, but they would also tear up a lot of ground too. I'm sure back before settlers came in, there were huge grass fires going that naturally controlled the trees.
