NC Indiana | We AI'd my daughters 4-h heifer and 2 other home raised heifer she owned (out of our herd bull at the time). We had $103 in supplies and shots (we did add a blue shot to show if they came back into heat), plus whatever you semen cost, plus your time, and the ABS tech was trying to sell us 4-H calves and he bred them for free if we agreeing to come look at more 4-H calves. He said he usually averaged about 50% on sync'd and 90% on natural heat on heifers.
At 60 head at $110/calf over 3 breeding seasons = $19,800 for breeding fees. How much bull power would this buy? I struggle with whether to AI or just buy bull and this is how my extension beef specialist tried to explain it to me, that's why I ask. Dad pumps septic tanks at one of the big dairies locally and usually runs into the AI tech there, who keeps after Dad to have him come AI our cows. | |
