Oxford County, ON | With baleage you reduce loss and risk. You cut, wait a day or two, and bale. It's a shorter window so you don't have to worry about weather as much. You should have less leaf loss. You're handling more water. Plastic isn't cheap, but making several passes with a tedder and/or rake to get the hay dry isn't free either.
Baleage doesn't have to be stored inside.
Individually wrapped bales use more plastic than a tube wrapper, but you can store a lot of bales in a small area, especially squares. Individual bales allow you to mix and match to create a good ration; once you open a tube you need to keep feeding or bales will start to spoil. If you choose individual bales you will require a bale squeeze, and smooth top bale wagons. Steel mesh is hard on plastic. The bales are heavier to handle, but most loaders will handle 3x3s just fine. | |
