The actual real world results are around .75 a day for winter (open winter , cake and dry grass) and about the same figuring hay and cake (actually cheaper but I figure more for wear and tear on bale bed) feed cake every 3 day our dry grass actually cost more than buying hay.
Cow doesn't have to be FAT through winter, for example this cow is a 4 BCS and weaned a calf close to 60% her bw - they do that and breed back but are thin I'm A OK with that, she works to make a living.
