Subject: RE: Installing floor heat

Leesburg, Ohio
I use radiantcompany.com

Very good info on their website and by phone. Easy to work with. Got all my materials from them. They often recommend 7/8" pex on 18" centers, instead of 1/2" on 6" centers. Lots easier to install with 1/3 as many runs, valves, and connections. Can use slightly longer runs with bigger pipe, also.

I like the insulation diagram that iseedit posted above. I insulated the outside of our foundations about 2' down, and then out about 2' from the foundation on top of the footer. Also insulated the outer 4' of the floor slab inside the foundation. No insulation in the center of the floors. But I am in southern Ohio, not northern MN, and heating to 60 degrees, not 70+. Works great. Very nice, even heat. Stores enough heat to catch up quickly after opening a door, and to keep things from freezing if the power goes off. Fully insulated floor would not store as much heat. After the floor reaches temperature, the difference in btu requirements are nil.
