Kind of curious to see what kind of ideas are shared on this too. We're eventually going to have to cut the lease at some point in the near future on the 50 acres of summer pasture we rent and cut the current herd of 25 females down to about 10-12 as my folks get older so when we do that means we probably need to improve the pasture some at the main farm which only gets grazed in the fall or for about 3-6 weeks around May when we are doing AI. We have a main alfalfa hay field we don't graze at all but another grass field we cut once for hay then let grow out for fall grazing and another main pasture and some lots that if we do it right we should be able to rotational graze them with some better quality to eat on. We've drilled clover into the 1 grass hay field/pasture in the past with good success. I know a neighbor once broadcast seeded then ran an aerator over some of his pasture which really livened it up since it was kind of 2 fold of working the seed in while helping the pasture open up a little to get nutrients to the roots better. May have to upload a photo later of our layout and get some suggestions possibly. |
