The reason so many of the larger dairies get immigrants is, most locals won't want to be at work at 4AM. Another thing is, milking is an art. You don't just stick anyone in the parlor and, expect them to take the same amount of care in the cattle as the farmer. Pay is regional, for example $12 per hour on a small to medium size dairy is pretty good around here, this does include general labor and, some equipment operation. And these are not poor working conditions.

What really gets me mad is the number of applicants who claim they have past experience when I talk to them on the phone. Once they stop by for the interview, they usually tell me they can drive a tractor and skid steer . when I ask what model they are familiar with, I either get an answer like, um um it's been a year so I really don't remember. But, I'M A FAST LEARNER. Or, I CAN DO IT ALL. Sorry for the rant.
