Northwest Missouri | I have had a lot of calving problems with heifers in the past, and the bulls I use now are negative on BW some by quite a bit and CED of more than 12. Several I have are 14's. Sure has cut back on the calving trouble. Still pull a couple every year but I think that is hard to avoid with heifers. I know I'm giving up some growth since we keep all our calves to yearlings. The heifers calves are a month older than everything else and usually end up lighter than the average. But I attribute a lot of that to heifers not milking as well as a mature cow. But either way I've pulled too many dead calves and had too many heifers crippled by big calves to worry about losing 75 or even 150 pounds on a yearling calf. If a heifer has a 60 pound calf on her own I am happy. | |
