Subject: RE: How far do you travel for your Bulls?

Try to raise them if we can by using some AI to get some new bloodlines in hopes of possibly raising a herd sire prospect. If we go outside of the herd don't really have a limit on how far and with about any major sale these days you can bid online too which helps if you can't make it to the sale but the closer the better obviously. We usually identify breeders whose genetics we like and reputation we trust and start from there. They also have to be raising cattle in an environment and similar type of management comparable to ours so that usually means bulls within the Midwest or northern states. The last bull we purchased was from a production sale of a large breeder 500 miles away and we've also looked at bulls in the past from a breeder as far away as 1100 miles but never was able to pull the trigger on a bull in one of their sales. The bull we bought 500 miles away usually had someone either delivering or picking up something from them that we were able to arrange some transportation where we met up around half way between them and us to get him.

When it comes to selling our own bulls or heifers we typically are OK about delivering to just about anywhere in the state since we live in the central part of it but anything outside of the state either you come get them or we can figure out an arrangement to meet no further than the state line depending on how far away we're talking. Delivery/transportation is something that factors into the sale price too, granted gas prices are a lot better today than they were not too long ago but you can easily blow a tank of gas or more just driving round trip within your own state.
