Subject: RE: Haylage and corn silage prices

western iowa,by Denison
simple math-180 bu corn is worth $3.50 hence $35 ton-actual tonnage only takes 8 bushel of corn to make a ton-could vary on moisture-comes out to $4.37 for corn in that ton-the 10 times price of corn is allowing for harvest cost and shrink

22.5 ton at 8 bushel-at 10 bushel corn per ton his silage would only yield 18 ton

on haylage to come to quick assumption I always figure $1 dollar per point-dry hay at 0% moisture $100 10% moisture at $90
50% moisture at $50
then I add $30 ton harvest cost to haylage-comes up $65 ton on original poster's question as he was 35% dry matter
50% moisture $80
60% moisture $70
70% moisture $60
80% moisture $50
90% moisture $40
haylage-as such it is truly alfalfa is hard to beat-if its grass-or other products I take away the $30 ton premium
so then its just $1 dollar per point dry matter-65% silage-wheat or rye-grass mixed with alfalfa $35 ton
