NW KS/ SC ID | Look into load trail.
IIRC back in the day the owners of PJ and load trail were business partners and had a fallout and went on their separate ways. consequently, there are alot of similarities, and IMO Load trail still looks to be better quality, AFAIK they dont have any sub-assembly plants south of the border in Mexico like PJ does. Hopefully PJ only makes frames for the smaller cheaper trailers in Mexico, but they could do the big goose's also.
I was not too impressed with Big Tex design 5 years ago, but it appears they are listening to customers and making changes. IIRC in 2014 or 2015 they went to a box beam outer rail, they now offer a lo-pro 14K (have had a lo-pro 20K for a while) and a few other things I like. They also have multiple factories, and one of them is pretty close to you in Caldwell Idaho, see if they offer tours to see if you like what you see.
We own some PJs, and the 07 is kind of a shoddy POS, but the 09 is quite a bit better. the design is nice, but the welds are pretty low grade, as are the axles and parts.
No matter what you do brand wise, sit down with the dealer and see if Dexters are optional. most trailers come standard with a cheap import axle, and Dexters are optional, a few actually run Dexters standard.
Also, look very hard at a Lo-Pro, most if not all major brands offer it. lower center of gravity makes a guy feel alot better with a tall load, and much easier to load something on the dovetail.
If you get a dovetail, look at the design, some the ramps are long and the top of the dove sits lower than the deck which gives a big hump to climb over, whereas others like PJ have shorter ramps and the top of the dove is flush with the deck. Not a big deal for a running tractor, but with a dead tractor it makes a huge difference. | |
