No, it's not just a FB thing. That's the way it used to be years ago. I had a cousin that traced our family tree way back, even travelling all over Europe. Found graves and names back to the 14th century. Using a maiden name as your new middle name is a way for your descendents to keep up with where you came from and who you are related to.
