You might be right for some. But for most I think it is a face book thing. If an old classmate never new she got married, how would she know to look up Mary Johnson. When the searcher only knew her as Mary Todd. So a quick internet search would pull up Mary Todd Johnson. Most probably don't include maiden name any where else.
