Subject: Elemental Sulfur vs AMS

I am running through some dry fertilizer blend numbers here and I was looking at my sulfur numbers and products. We band dry phos, sulfur, zinc and potash with liquid 32% UAN in a row on 30" spacing. We had been using MES-Z but this year I think the MAP price has dropped enough to pay to run MAP in it's own tank and then blend the S, Z and K together in another tank (we use a 1910 commodity cart). I am still getting pretty good uniformity doing this and then I could alter my S, Z, and K rates and my P is usually variable rated so it wouldn't affect the S, Z, and K like it does in the MES-Z. My question comes down to whether I should use dry Elemental Sulfur or AMS for my sulfur source?

I am in a pretty low yield environment in corn 100-120 bpa is pretty good. Can see 150+ if really good conditions. K-State recs for 100 bpa corn say around 15 lbs of Sulfur and 19 lbs for 120 corn in my soils. This is not even using any sulfur adjustments. Some people still adjust for rain which I don't think we get much Sulfur from rain. I grid sample at 8" and get a Sulfur reading from that and take 24" samples for N, Chloride, and Sulfur. My average Sulfur at 8" is around 15-17 pounds. My deep samples show an average of 26 lbs of Sulfur available. So I have enough Sulfur in the top 8" for my yield goal and about 10 lbs of Sulfur surplus in my 24" root zone for my yield goal.

I could probably get by without any Sulfur but would like to continue to put back. MES-Z is 50% elemental and 50% AMS sulfur forms. My question is should I stick to that or can I get by going to all elemental sulfur? I realize it doesn't break down very fast but I am putting it in the ground 4" deep about 2 months prior to planting. I can also put on more actual Sulfur using elemental sulfur for the same price as AMS even factoring in the additional Nitrogen I get out of the AMS. So what would you guys do?
