I went with treated wood to save some coin and it has held up good. I used an Olympic stain right after I built it and again when it was about 10 years old. It is due for another coat this year as it will be 20 years old now.
Mine has a roof all the way around. If you are not planning on putting a roof, then definitely go with composite. I think the sun is harder on the wood than the rain, but the combination will ruin a wood deck pretty quick.
I did make the mistake of using nails instead of screws. Definitely go with screws.
The one feature that I did not skimp on: I put 10" pvc pipes in the ground and filled with concrete to form the piers.
