sw mb. | The formerly optional, now standard mill grate is more restrictive than the slugbuster. The fact that the mill grate reaches all the way across the hammermill means that it can sometimes reduce capacity as the OP found. It helps protect the drivetrain when tough grinding conditions are experienced but it can slow throughput if conditions are ideal. Also Jake's machine is running two 4" screens. He would probably be happier with a 4" & 5" configuration. Edit Hi John Deere 1, when the mill is turning at speed, the hammers extend well past the mill grate. It's not easy to tell by the photos but please trust me on this one.
