Rn Co KS | Be sure you understand the regulations before you move forward. Don't take what I give as sure fact but the regs are something similar to the following:
Over 6000 gal farm COMBINED farm capacity requires permits. A semi load is about 7500 gal.
Once you need a permit then nearly everything oil and fuel related on the farm needs to be in containment. This includes every tank over 55 gal capacity. This means your used oil tote and the new oil tote in the shop are now out of compliance since it is not in containment. Get this--crop oil is also counted.
Now that your name is on the list there is a greater chance of inspection. Annual reporting. Keeping a record of discharge of rainwater. How close are you to a "stream" is likely a big deal regarding rain water discharge. Keeping a record of your own inspections of the facility. Lots of details and plenty of places for an inspector to claim out of compliance. Double wall tanks solve some of this but don't release a site from regulations and they come with a hefty price.
IMO the value of a tank is not the 10-20 cents savings on fuel. It is the ability to purchase and hold when you think the time is right that has the most potential savings. I'm not saying it should not be done since plenty of people have seen enough value to do so. Just be sure you get with someone who is very knowledgeable prior to spending money.
