N.W. Illinois | You are correct on alfalfa being a poor choice for waterways. Other things to consider are the big expense of rup alfalfa and alfalfa having a short longevity.
Our local NRCS will not allow alfalfa in a waterway mix on approved waterways. Also our local NRSC has cost shared waterway establishment with tile installation in the past, not sure if they still do it. This involved tiling on both sides of the waterway many times.
To extend waterway longevity on our farms we have started outlining them with non rup herbicides. It's an extra trip and expense but we feel it is worth it. Our waterways are all perennial grasses which are noninvasive.
