...Yes it does kill microorganisms. Within about 4" of the knife. You've got 22" of soil between those knives full of microorganisms that are just waiting for a lack of competition from other organisms to get busy multiplying. It's not an issue. nh3 is the single most popular nitrogen fertilizer in the country. If it's causing a lot of problems...someone would have realized it by now.
