I really don't think anyone minds customer choice or that new farmers can find a niche, but there is the notion that one is better than the other and the conventional is actually bad. It can be a little frustrating when conventional means we raise this food to really high standards so people don't die from foodborne illness any longer and almost anyone rich or poor can enjoy the products and quality that was only available to the very rich and/or powerful in the past.

I see the 'conventional' methods as a far more noble venture for society compared to serving a few wealthy enough to choose something based solely on image. That said, it's a market and give them what they want until they figure it out.

Frankly the folks wanting to grow a beef, hog or chickens in their backyard will learn a lot about farming if they don't make themselves sick. Almost no one understands what farming is or how it works. Media types rile folks up so they tend not to have the attitude of "let's just let the farmers do their thing so we don't have to" any longer. However, what replaces that attitude can be pretty wacky. It's like the anti gmo guy that finally cornered himself when he noticed if he was going to 'believe' in the science of global warming why would he not believe in the science of gmo's? Naturally one of those isn't science but it doesn't matter, it's image and attitude. If it makes a market, sell them what they want with a smile.
