Subject: RE: wheat producers

Southeast Wisconsin
A little extra work and wheat responds better than any other crop we grow in our area. Like you we plant wheat on our marginal ground.

Plant a short variety with disease resistance and good yield results and then save seed as long as it isn't pioneer seed.

Don't overdo the nitrogen in the early spring. 30 to 45 lbs

Don't be afraid of copper with your herbicide pass

Spend some money for the sprayer and buy nitrogen application nozzles. I use streamer bars

Apply a head scab fungicide, no exceptions here just do it

Timing is everything. Applications need to be done based on proper scouting. Get to know the stages of growth. 24 to 48 hours can be a make or break in wheat.

Finally, plant a cover crop afterwards regardless if nrcs is handing out money. Your corn crop the next year will be better for it. After a few rotations your marginal ground will be producing much better on all three crops.

Email me if you would like more specifics. We planted 600 ac of wheat this year and yeah the budget is tight.
