You've had some good replies already. Most of the time baling off stalks is a net zero when you consider all the costs. Raking one pass, baling one pass, loader and wagons across fields at odd intervals packing ground down. All bad for the next crop year. And I hear guys say they have no time to seed a cover after combining - baling off stalks is a major field operation more intensive than combining.

One more thing. What do you mean by "carbon penalty"? Explain in detail. I dont need a doctoral dissertation but explanation is needed why this is so horrible.
