Subject: RE: cover crops and baling cornstalks

SE PA
Usually the cover crop does not have much biomass right after harvest. However in a week or two it really picks up if temps are still warm. In June, I interseeded a cover crop mix in 5 acres for a neighbor Amishman. After he harvested the corn with a 2 row picker, shred the stalks with a 2 row shredder, raked the cornstalks and then small square baled the corn fodder- all with horses each time, the cover crop was pretty much beaten down but with the nice fall we had it did green up later. With wider equipment it shouldn't be a problem and something more farmers are starting to do. I'm sure there are some situations that baling cornstalks will work great and other times be less successful from what i've seen.
