NE Iowa | If you seed the cover crop that early and get any growth I don't know how you would rake, shred, or somehow windrow the stalks and not get a bunch of green in the bales. That green would cause the bales to stick together and mold and loose value. If the cover doesn't get much growth I would still be afraid that the baling process would uproot the cover and greatly reduce the stand. Depending how far north you are I would just combine the corn early, pay a little extra to dry it, bale the stalks like normal, skip the vetch, and just seed cereal rye after baling. Cereal rye can be planted fairly late and still work. | |
