I think it's more the mentality than anything else. You're advocating that a business that is in financial difficulties not change salary structures, but thinking the cuts need to come from productive assets. Obviously not as productive as before, but still the base of most farm businesses. I say that the entire business model likely needs overhauled, from rent prices all the way through the salary structure.

If they're truly managing it like a business, then one year of tight operating margins won't really be a problem. The problem is when the operator has forgotten it IS a business, and lost spending discipline, and started treating the business as a personal ATM to fund a life style that might not be completely warranted by the business in a run of years that the business is seeing windfall profits. And has your lawyer approached you about upping his rates because his new Cadillac costs more?
