Subject: RE: Original Star Trek episode question #2

NC Iowa
they had a food synthesizer/replicator to create food, and a waste extractor to get rid of it.

"As it's called "waste extraction" I imagine it's related to transporter technology. It "extracts" the waste by beaming it out of you. However it's also implied it's a somewhat dirty job involving tanks so perhaps it gets deposited in tanks before being taken somewhere else and, presumably, recycled, maybe into matter the replicators can use (we can already purify urine into water, makes sense that with replicator technology they could do the same with feces). Why it requires a special area to do this, though, is hard to figure out. Maybe it requires a sensitive internal scan where clothing would disrupt the equipment.."
