Assuming the asset doesn't need to be devalued to a new clearing price (price seeking), then I suppose distressed assets sales are a form of rent-seeking.   From an market efficiency standpoint, that doesn't seem wise.  

But - from the banks perspective - they have to keep their own doors open, too.
