I will answer that. cars are about 63 feet long. Explaining the 2.0 is easy. You need space to have them set out empty and place to have them full on the other side of the spout. The .1 is just the company rule or American Association of Railroads (AAR). Not all cars are the same. So, they ad 10% for good measure.

That is the rule that screwed us. Plenty of siding in town just some of it was on the other side of main track. Only customer on the line so they let us move cars to siding on the other side of main track. No issues, nobody forgot a switch in wrong position, no problems. An ethanol plant went in past our elevator on the line. No more opening switches. Sort of no matter what. Now, being the ethanol plant uses most of the corn in the area, not much need to rail corn. Load beans 10 miles away and 1/3 to 1/4 the bushels of corn. The area is better off with ethanol plant than without. The ethanol plant wouldn't be there without the rail. The rail would have been abandoned if we wouldn't have set up to load on it. Things worked out - sure not how it looked 30 years ago
