Subject: RE: Has contracted directly with a rail buyer?

Sac & Story county IA
Oh, I remember those days. A man named Jack Haley owned the Chicago Central railroad from Dubuque to Council Bluffs. He spoke to the members of our cooperative. He told them that he was happy to have 300 new customers. He did fine by us for awhile. Single cars, half decent service, haul train to the short end of his line and turn over to other roads. Let us cross the mainline track to park cars. Then, he lost the line. The noose started tightening. Promise cars, no cars. Bigger units, less time to load. Always get cars overnight, Pay overtime. Employees didn't want to be there. Had to have union operator on switch engine to enter mainline. Then no exclusion to open switch onto mainline.
A fertilizer company, international conglomerate, wanted to build a new facility to unload units. Outside of town. All new good quality facilities. Word from rail company "Don't build, we won't serve you"

I am happy things are not like that all over. But that is our experience.

The man may as well talk to the rail company. It sure looks possible to give decent service but pure obstinate managers is what we have found.
