Grand Rapids, MI | Wow, Ed! You are quite the mad scientist when it comes to HDD's. I don't even want to ask what necessitated such experiences.
I don't think I can add magic formula to try, in fact I learned many more than I already knew!
I just need to say when you rebuild the drive, set up a mirrored RAID array. Disks are so cheap, it doesn't pay to deal with all these issues when they fail. With RAID mirroring, the same info is written to two disks at the same time, making mirror copies. If one drive fails, you will get an error. Simply unplug the drive, destroy it, replace it and tell the computer to copy the good drive onto the new one. Back in business, never missing a beat. Remember its not if the drive fails, its when. Many newer MB's have this ability built in. If not you can get PCI RAID controllers pretty inexpensively ($20-$40) if you don't need anything fancy. You can step up to the newest SATA drives too if you like. | |
