A few years ago results of a fairly extensive and comprehensive study the decline in juvenile crime and delinqency was very strongly correlated to the legality and availability of abortion & birth control. The explanation was that where abortion and birth control wasn't available there were many more unwanted children and unwanted and unsupervised young males. It was uncanny how the decline in crime youth crime started 14-15 years after Roe ve Wade and declined as the rate of abortion increased but lagged by the time it for a child to reach their late teens.
A couple years ago Colarado defunded their teen pregnancy programs and a private philanthropist funded free birthcontrol for certain districts (those that chose to accept it). The rate of teenage pregnancy was far lower, less than half the other districts.
Now you can argue the morality of birthcontrol and abortion until the cows come home but the simple fact is all the huffing & puffing isn't going to stop unwanted pregnancies. It didn't years ago and won't in the future. Perhaps we should take a very selfish view of the problem and realize that spending a little money now saves us way more in the long run.
As far as free healthcare goes perhaps the simplest solution is to simply repeal all the samaritian laws that require hospitals to treat the sick & injured for free. And while we're at it abolish Medicare & Medicaid as well. Who ever heard of such a thing as free medical care for old people. As Scrooge so aptly said in A Christmas Carol: `If they would rather die,'' ... ``they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population."
