My theory is that cover crops can "extend" the depth of your soils. There is a generally untapped reservoir if you can manage water table and get plants and the soil to work for you as many days a year as possible.
Have had cover crops for several years with incredible positive results. Added strip till to it this tear so eagerly awaiting the result.
