East Central Kansas | is fully explored by roots. They easily move laterally 15" and corn and soybean roots will move at least 30" laterally. That's the reason you see some skip-row (plant 2, skip 1) dryland corn in Eastern Colorado. It does take a little time for the roots to extend that far, but it does happen. In the skip row case, the skip row area provides a reservoir of water for the plant to use later in the season.
