East Central Kansas
is fully explored by roots. They easily move laterally 15" and corn and soybean roots will move at least 30" laterally. That's the reason you see some skip-row (plant 2, skip 1) dryland corn in Eastern Colorado. It does take a little time for the roots to extend that far, but it does happen. In the skip row case, the skip row area provides a reservoir of water for the plant to use later in the season.
