We can "mine" our soils for a long time (centuries) at that rate. Midwest soils contain a LOT of phos, trouble is accessing it. Banding the fertilizer creates a hot zone that can feed the plant early without flooding the entire profile and shutting down the mycorrhizal fungal network.

It's not a zero-sum game.
