You really aren't a student of history are you? The depression started on the farm in the early 20's. From 1923 to 1930 there were 5000 bank failures due to the farm economy at that time. It was part of the impetus for the massive crash of 29, it didn't start in October of 29, it was part of the straws that broke the camels back.

As far as your man speculating, no idea what he is, farmer, business man whatever. You have no sell order so you can't say what happened to his trade. 1928 was a wet summer in North Dakota, second wettest on record but the tap turned off to the point that 1929 was the driest on record. Now if you back and look at what the average price farmer received for wheat throughout 29 he saw a decline through harvest but it actually was higher in sept-oct than feb-April, it actually was still higher in Jan- February of 30 than what he could receive in February of 29 due to a large carry in of stocks from 28. Now if you could show us a chart of Minnie wheat in 29 or a possible sale order of his buy than we could know what this speculator reaped.

Once again I could care less what your view of 179 is, it's a tool, ask Tara.
As an educator, do a little studying before you spout off.
As far as your long tail, tell your students how it got caught in the door while all the shorts were running through it in 2012, no mention of the surprise you had then huh?
your history is correct. There were also 10,000 banks which collapsed between 1930 and 1933. Those banks held in excess of $6 billion in 1930's money. Also Bank of United States Started the collapse on December 10th 1930 when 25,000 people gather to withdraw. Legend is it was started by one man.
