Statesville, NC | than other manufacturers? I've been looking at getting a trailer with something heavier than 7k axles, mainly to get better brakes. The 8k axle option with 17.5 wheels cost around $2000 more than 7k for a tandem trailer with most manufacturers, but Kaufman offers it for $1000. The 7.2k Dexter and 8k have much bigger and better brakes so I've been pricing axles to build a trailer. I ran across the Kaufman parts site and noticed they have an 8k axle cheaper than anyone. I called them and asked what brand axle, size and brand of brakes, etc. They told me it's a "hybrid" axle with an 8k beam and 7k drums and brakes. What a cheap way to go. The 7k brakes are not good enough for a 7k axle, much less an 8k axle. I also asked them if this is the axle they offer in their "super duty upgrade" package, and it is. Somehow they adjust the gvwr of the trailer so the axle is still rated 7k, even though it looks like 8k, so it's legal to run the lighter brakes. Like always, you get what you pay for. | |
