Subject: Parana (old area) vs. Mato Grosso (expansion area)

Jesup, IA
Just saying, the farmer quoted in the article is from Parana. The old production region in southern Brazil. Farming there isn't all that different from farming in an "I" state in America. Good infrastructure, established markets, richer soil.

The farmer is lightly quoted about farming closer to the equator in the expansion areas of Mato Grosso, Marinao, Tocatins, Inland Bahia. Soils take fertilizer. You need pricey Intacta GMO seed to keep the caterpillars from eating the crop, plus four or five fungicide apps to keep away blights, then you need to get the crop down the BR169 to Santos Port or up to the Amazon to get exported. Not saying it all isn't done, it just isn't a free ride to break out cerrado into crop land.

How would you feel about 150 miles of this road to get to an 1100 mile two lane paved road to take you to port? Or crops that can easily rot in the rain? Yes, there area some areas that look like the last picture with the rainbow, but it's not land that got put into production last year. And even then, it's planted to cotton.
