Liming culture, it must be a regional/local phenomenon.

I have never in my life seen my dad purchase a pound of lime. Now that I have my own acres on of the first new things I bought was a new chandler lime spreader. I have taken ground in the 4s and 5s and made pretty good farms out of them.

Anyhow. A couple of the best hings I unknowingly did when I started doing some lime was buy a new spreader and buy a pull type one that allowed me to load it with a skid loader I already own instead of a high priced but reliable or a low priced but unreliable pay loader. I was going to build a spreader but after checking I was able to purchase a brand new variable rate one for less than 20k. Not only that but the vr allows me to not only change rates on the fly but assure myself that wheel slippage is not possible.

I really enjoy spreading lime.

+1!
Purchasing a new lime/fertilizer/ litter spreader was the best descision I have ever made for my farm. When it is done with lime it goes on to spread potash and then spreads litter all winter when the ground is fit. Neighbors ask about spreading for them all the time because the co-ops are charging 15.00 to 20.00 a ton to spread.
I say go for it...you will keep busy and make some money
