I don't think it would be worth the effort to rebuild one, unless you could get the spreader for free.  A new '12 Doyle was in the low $20k range and is a good spreader with a good pattern.

As to why more don't spend some coins on lime, IDK.  My area is much the same as you, lots of fields need a ton or two, and it makes A LOT of difference.
