You are correct that Chinese soybean imports rose gradually though the 2000's but I distinctly remember reading something about a Chinese threat to cut soybean imports in 2006 as an explanation for the drop in soybean acres. However, I can't find anything available on the internet to that effect.
I'm either getting old or senile or both.
