It is a carbohydrate.  Sugar is used as a preservative in jellies, etc.  But when diluted, I'd think it would be ready for microbial consumption.  Some soil microbiologists say that sugars such as these (including molasses) are used in seed-row treatments, it causes a quick flare up of bacteria.
