Subject: Where's the piles and what Sat missed..

I was out west week before last.. and golly for all the hype..  expected piles down main street of every town..  Now Yes there is some.. but not what I expected..  as you note a bunch of it must still be out in the field.

Honestly that's the reason we switched to growing corn.. good or bad.. at least you are done early and it's out of the field..  One year we had a wonderful sorghum crop coming on.. then it turned wet.. not a lot but.. just damp.. misty.. not like we got a lot of precip.. just that we could not get it out of the field.  The elevators were full and could only dry a few loads per day.. anywho.. we harvested in Nov.. tried again in Dec.. Jan.. Feb.. etc.. it never dried down but the yield sure tailed off..  aka Sorghum will go down.. but it won't dry down.

If we would have had a wet fall here it would have been a mess..

Sat was talking about test weight et all.. one thing he neglects to mention is that when I worked at the elevator.. the grain inspectors made us write off about 1/2 of 1 percent for every time we turned the grain..   When you drop grain 100' some of it turns to dust..  that seemed to be about right.. on a 14 byn bushel corn crop 1/2 of 1% is 70 million.. consider all the times this crop turns..farmer to bins.. bins to elevator.. elevator to terminal.. to barge.. unloaded and loaded to ship.. etc.. or whatever..

If we turn a 13.6 billion bu crop just 5 times.. that's still about 350 million bushels that gets turned to dust...

Heck the WHOLE sorghum crop is only 594 myn bushels..  The cornbelt almost turns to dust more than half of what we raise as sorghum..  and given the wet fall.. we're gonna have some issues getting the sorghum out.. stored.. and kept in condition before it makes it to the end user.

Still it's a nice problem to have.. better than too dry.

On farm storage helps.. we're probably gonna need some more...
