I am also on a coop board here in Illinois and agree with everything swne posted. I also was a merchandiser for Dreyfus in the 90's. One additional point is that it is illegal to intentionally introduce foreign products in to grain. So no rock, sand, etc. But off grade grain is blended with higher quality grain every day. Also , in the case of wheat, other classes are routinely blended in up to the 5% limit when they can be purchased at a discount.

I normal operations, the shrink charged covers any loss of bushels at the country elevator level. Shrinkage on the commercial level, such as spillage from unloading rail cars or barges falls on the account of the firm ding the unloading and is watched very closely by management
