Subject: RE: Test and Specs

S Illinois
Do growers up north not normally see 58+ test weight corn? The reason I ask is because 58-62 is normal in this locale despite bushels being being calculated at 56. Yield and test weight has very little correlation. Last year was nothing special test weight wise in Illinois despite record yields. The number one determinant of test weight here is variety and then possibly late season N availability. While I agree, low test weight would likely be played up, test weight in general make for good conversation, but mean little except at the extremes and no 62lb corn is not extreme. Maybe some of the processors or merchants can say, but my guess the year was not extreme enough to change the average US test weight by even 1 lb.

As to USDA, test weight(density) means nothing to them in field surveys. Total ear mass is all they are worried about.
