Bins, elevator legs, augers, etc are expensive tools for elevators, but usually those bins get filled, emptied out and filled again multiple times during the year versus the emergency piles that in most cases get picked up quickly and aren't even used some years. Its those tradeoffs that give an elevator manager nightmares. When you look around the country you'll see new farmer owned grain bin structures that rival grain elevator sites. It wasn't that many years back that we were told the elevators were full, everybody was full, no place for the grain to go as the elevators didn't want to make additional piles. Considering the good yields in Minnesota this fall and how quickly it was harvested, I think the elevators performed pretty well.
