If you are going to take a long-term futuristic view don't forget to factor in world population growth, projected to increase 32% over the next 35 years.  And how many aquifers will run dry in that time span?  How many phosphate mines will be played out? How will global climate changes threaten current crop production systems.  Instead of sacrificing the future, it is my guess farmers world wide will need all the technology they can muster just to keep pace with demand.
